Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Numbers 22:22-23 (ANIV)
22 But God was very angry when he [Balaam] went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat her to get her back on the road.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Verse 21 tells us it is morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun is high & overhead, casting shadows below figures & objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Balaam son of Beor, is being carried off by his donkey, away from the angel in the road.
The two servants mentioned in verse 22 are standing in the bottom right of this scene, looking rather bemused.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
I decided to keep the road and background very simple for this scene, to help the viewer focus on the action: Balaam fighting to keep his balance & pulling on the bridle of his donkey, as she does a quick U-turn & heads off the road with the angel in it! At this point only the donkey can see the angel, Balaam & his two servants are unaware of the supernatural being on the road.

Although we are told in verses 15 that “Balak sent other princes, more numerous and more distinguished than the first.” I have not included them in this scene.

Notice that I have given the donkey long eye lashes, to show that she is female!
