Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Acts 27:11-13 (ANIV)
11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. 12 Since the harbour was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbour in Crete, facing both south-west and north-west.

The Storm
13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative, I have set this scene in the early morning, just after sunrise.

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen, on the left (East)) is low on the horizon, illuminating this scene, casting shadows to the right of figures and objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: a sailor, doctor Luke, the apostle Paul, unnamed passenger.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene was fun to draw, especially the fluffy clouds in the early morning sunshine. It is a peaceful scene, unlike the rest in the set! It is nice to have a strong contrast between the calm seas and skies in this scene and the fierce and dark environment of the rest of the scenes.

From Fair Haven the ship sailed west, following the coast of Crete towards the sea port of Phoenix.

The unnamed sailor on the left is taking a moment to enjoy the calm sea and rising sunshine. Doctor Luke is talking to the apostle Paul, both sitting on wooden crates. I wanted the doctor’s expression to suggest disbelief at what Paul had told the Centurion, pilot and ship owner: that they were headed for disaster. If you were to observe the calm and serene weather of that day, you might be wondering whether Paul was wrong about his warning… but wait until the rest of the story unfolds!

Here is the scene without the ship in the foreground.
