The faith of the Canaanite Woman

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible. Daytime

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen & off to the left) illuminates this scene, casting shadows to the right of the figures.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: The Canaanite woman (wife), her husband, their demon-possessed daughter.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
I decided to have a very simple background, without any objects, so that the viewer’s attention is focussed solely on the three figures in this scene. The woman on the right is the demon-possessed daughter of the couple on the left. She is pulling out her own hair. Notice the talon-like finger nails she has!

I thought that the Canaanites were a rather simple civilization, but when I researched them, it turns out they were quite sophisticated in many areas, including art.

I wanted to show a clear difference in dress between the Canaanites & Israelites. I found an inspiring illustration of a Canaanite warrior on the internet, which influenced my design decisions for my own version of their costume. I used earth colors (browns) with contrasting triangular shapes, which will form the visual design difference between the two races.
