Acts 27:33-38 (ANIV)
33 Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. “For the last fourteen days,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food—you haven’t eaten anything. 34 Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head.” 35 After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat. 36 They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves. 37 Altogether there were 276 of us on board. 38 When they had eaten as much as they wanted, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative. It could be day or night, as the sun is obscured by the storm clouds, so I have set this scene in the day time.
LIGHTING NOTES:
Two lanterns, hanging on a bronze pegs behind the figures, provide a warm, yellow light to this scene. There is a third lantern (unseen, behind the viewer) casting its warm glow particularly on the figures in the foreground.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
The apostle Paul is the green robed figure on the left, with various un-named sailors &/or passengers around him.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene is set below decks, and is similar to “Acts 27 – Sea storm – Scene 05 – Paul’s counsel”, except that we are viewing the ship in the opposite direction; looking from the mid point towards the bow (front) of the ship. On the left we can see wooden steps leading up to the water-soaked deck of the ship.
Notice the woven hammocks, strung up between stout wooden posts and the ribs of the ship. I imagine that nearly all of the passengers (& certainly all of the crew) were accommodated using hammocks, with two or maybe three strung one above the other. This arrangement would make use of the scant spare space below decks.
There is a single mouse or rat in this scene – can you find it?!
Here is the scene without the figures in the foreground.

Bible Cartoon: Acts 27 – Paul shipwrecked – Scene 03 – Paul breaks bread
Here is the original pencil sketch I drew for this scene.
Acts 27 – Paul shipwrecked – Scene 03 – Paul breaks bread – greyscale
As you can see from the pencil sketch above I originally designed this scene on board the ship, with the ship’s hull set at a high angle due to the hurricane’s relentless waves. However, I thought it more likely that the apostle Paul would break bread and speak encouragingly to the passengers and crew in the comparative safety below decks. For that reason I have set the picture inside the ship.
