Judges 14:15 (ANIV)
On the fourth day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Coax your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you invite us here to rob us?”
Some Septuagint manuscripts & Syriac; Hebrew, 7th.
TIME OF DAY:
The Bible doesn’t specify the time of day for this scene.
The scene is inside a house, there are unseen oil lamps lighting the scene from above, casting shadows under people and objects.
Samson’s fiancée is the girl in the purple dress. The three men are three of Samson’s Philistine companions.
This scene shows the three men from the previous picture pointing at, intimidating and threatening Samson’s fiancée. Their threats were pretty terrible…”we will burn you and your father’s household to death” and, what’s even more terrible is that they actually did it too (see Judges 15:6).
Notice that the men are all clean shaven, as I imagine the Philistines might have been. They are also dressed somewhat differently from the Hebrew people, which also helps to differentiate them visually from the Israelites. Mind you, I’ve drawn them with long flowing robes, so they do like quite similar!
