Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Genesis 2:18-20 (NLT)
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man [3] to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

[3]
Or, Adam, (and so throughout the chapter.)

DRAWING NOTES:

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (in the centre of the picture) illuminates this scene, casting shadows below objects. There is a glow of power around the figure of the Lord God.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
The Lord God.
Adam.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This picture shows the Lord God dropping dust from his hand and blowing his breath on it, which leads to the creation of all the animals on Earth (see verse 19 above). The dust and breath are swirling around, gradually coming together and creating various animals in the air. The man Adam is sitting on the ground, busily naming all the animals the Lord God is making. I decided to have a section of grass in front of Adam for the dual purpose of 1) giving a foreground close-up region so we can see the smaller animals (e.g. the beetles) and 2) providing for Adam’s modesty!

Notice the deer fawn resting peacefully in the fore paws of the Panther; at this point in creation there would have been no predators and prey, and all things were in complete harmony, as sin had not yet entered the world. Hence vulnerable animals (like a deer fawn) would not have been concerned about who they shared their space with!

Bible Doctrine Notes
2:18 EVIL AND SUFFERING, Divine Origin (2.31A)

The whole of the created world was considered good by the Lord God (see note on Genesis 1:1-3). The creation of woman reinforces the overall goodness of God’s creation, since He noted that it was not good for the man Adam to be alone. Man was not evil, but was nevertheless incomplete and needed “a suitable helper” for him. The good God provided for that human need.

2:18 HUMANITY, Marriage (2.43D)
God created marriage to meet the basic need of love and companionship that dwells within us all. The expression describing this companion literally means “a helper corresponding to him” or “a helper alongside him”, which is a wonderful description of the divinely appointed and unique relationship that exists between a husband and wife.

2:18 FAMILY, Companionship (5.82A)
One of God’s basic purposes for marriage is companionship between a man and a woman. A companion is one who stands alongside us, help us, is suitable or compatible with us and one who shares their personal life with us. The unique nature of this companion was demonstrated when Adam could not find a suitable companion among all the animals that God had made. By being built from the side of Adam himself, the suitable companion shared the same physical nature that Adam had. The Bible focuses on the similarity of man and woman and on their mutual need for each other. Because of their similarity, the man and woman can marry and establish a one flesh union that takes priority over all other family relationships.

2:18 FAMILY, Social Persons (5.81C)
For a satisfactory development, human life needs relationships: it is made to be social, relating to one another. Marriage is the fundamental response to this need for relationship, but more generally, human beings need social interaction to become and maintain themselves as whole persons. Personal development takes place within the larger family context of parents, siblings, spouses, children, in-laws, etc. In order to illustrate and instruct God’s people concerning the interplay of social life in families, the Bible contains many positive and negative examples of family life.
