Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Genesis 2:15-17 (NLT)
15 The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative. Daytime.

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (in the centre of the picture) illuminates this scene, casting shadows below objects. There is a glow of power around the figure of the Lord God.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
The Lord God, the man Adam.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
I referred to the previous Bible Cartoon I recently completed (Genesis 02 – Adam and Eve – Scene 02 – The garden in Eden) to make sure the tree of the knowledge of good and evil looked the same. However, this version of it is more detailed as the viewer is much closer to it in this picture. I have added an eerie green glow around the fruit, just for fun! The Lord God is indicating the tree with his right hand, and wagging a finger at Adam in an expression of “don’t do it!” to Adam, who looks a bit surprised or perhaps awestruck!

You can just make out the pale coloured stream that runs between the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, on the extreme left hand side of this scene.

Here is the scene without the figures in the foreground.

Bible Doctrine Notes
2:15 HUMANITY, Work (2.43G)

Human work was part of God’s original plan for His people. It is a divine gift and should not be viewed as a punishment for sin. In giving us work to do, God was sharing a part of His responsibility to care for the world; work is therefore a divine gift. Work and labour is a normal part of the responsibility of God’s people.

2:16-17 EVIL AND SUFFERING, Human Origin (2.31C)
God created human beings to be free, but with limits; eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was prohibited by God. By refusing to obey God’s command, evil and suffering entered human history. A misuse of our gift of freedom from God is frequently the direct cause of human suffering, although suffering can sometimes be a divine punishment for sin (See note on Genesis 3:14-24).

2:16-17 HUMANITY, Moral Consciousness (2.41C)
Human moral consciousness was established by divine commandments and the gift of free will to chose whether or not to obey them. Without the freedom to chose whether or not to obey God’s divine commandments would have reduced us to automatons; robots slavishly obeying our creator. Freedom without divine guidance provides the basis for an utterly unstable, chaotic, amoral life and society.

2:16-17 SALVATION, Human Freedom (4.25A)
The doctrine of salvation contains God’s sovereignty and Adam’s freedom of choice, existing side by side. God the creator informs us of what is right and best for us, but we are free to accept or reject that divine direction. Our freedom makes salvation necessary; God’s sovereignty makes salvation possible.

2:16-17 CHRISTIAN ETHICS, Moral Limits (4.42D)
Human ethical freedom caries with it responsibility. So that we will not infringe upon the freedom of other people, or take God’s rights unto ourselves, we must consider and obey the limits God sets on our free will.

2:17 HUMANITY, Death (2.44A)
From the beginning of human history, death has been understood to be a direct consequence of our disobedience of God’s commandments, which were issued for our own good. Only later was it clearly revealed that the ultimate form of death was spiritual death, the permanent separation from God. (See Romans 8:1-13).

2:17 HUMANITY, Marriage (2.43D)
God created marriage to meet the basic need of love and companionship that dwells within us all. The expression describing this companion literally means “a helper corresponding to him” or “a helper alongside him”, which is a wonderful description of the divinely appointed and unique relationship that exists between a husband and wife.
