Nehemiah 7:4-73 (ANIV)
The list of the exiles who returned
4 Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. 5 So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Verse 4 explains what Nehemiah was facing: The people in Jerusalem were few, and the houses were not yet rebuilt. Although the protective walls of the city had just recently been rebuilt, Nehemiah recognised that the population was low and there were many abandoned or derelict houses… which was quite a problem for him! However, verse 5 onwards reveals that Nehemiah knew that God was not finished with him or the Jewish people yet. He the population was low and there were many abandoned houses. He attributed God with stirring Nehemiah’s heart to help Jerusalem grow & prosper. Before that could happen, Nehemiah needed to know how many people were present to bring this prosperity forth, so he took a census and looked at the registry of returning exiles first written by Ezra (see Ezra 2:1-70). This list was important because it showed who among the Jewish people in exile had the pioneering spirit & resolve to return to their broken, occupied homeland & commence the rebuild… no mean feat given that they had been away from Israel for 70 years. These few people were willing to endure hardship and discomfort because they had a call from God that was much more important to them. Although life might seem EASIER in Babylon, these pioneers realised that their lives were BETTER to be in Jerusalem.

Because specific family & individual names are noted in the list above, we can deduce that each person so listed was important to God. Even the generosity of their gifts to support the work were important, since they were specifically listed towards the end of the chapter.

The significance of the wall repair work wasn’t so much in the rebuild itself, although that allowed the people to feel secure & safe in Jerusalem & removed their since of guilt & shame. But even more important was the psychological benefit the building work gave to the Jewish people; it taught them to work together, to work facing stiff opposition, and to work hard to achieve their goals.
