Matthew 2:19-21 (NLT)
19 When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 20 “Get up!” the angel said. “Take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead.” 21 So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Day, mid afternoon.

LIGHTING NOTES:
A warm sun is shining from the right (west), which infuses the scene with warm yellow tones, casting shadows to the left & below figures & objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Joseph (the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus) is asleep in bed. We can see the dream he is having, which shows himself, Mary & Jesus, with the angel of the Lord.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This picture shows Joseph dreaming whilst asleep in bed. The “dream bubble” above his body shows his dream, in which he is leading a donkey, which is carrying Jesus & his mother Mary. They are leaving Egypt & heading for Israel. The angel of the Lord is beckoning to Joseph & pointing towards Israel. Behind the angel I have placed a signpost, written in Hebrew (& English!) that indicates the directions back to Egypt & forward to Israel. I very much doubt that such signposts existed in Biblical times, it is simply my visual device to indicate the direction of the two countries, & to show the trio are leaving Egypt.
I found suitable photographs to inspire the rugged, wilderness, mountainous background, which depicts somewhere on the Sinai peninsula, which is between Egypt & Israel.
Notice the great pyramids of Geza in the far distance.
