Luke 6:46-48a (NLT)
Building on a solid foundation
46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48a It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. [When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built.]

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene shows a family building a house. Notice that they are digging away sand and are building only on solid rock.

I decided to find out what the Bible refers to as a wise animal and include that in the picture, to expand the idea of wisdom in the illustration. Proverbs chp 30 came to my rescue, indicating four animals that are considered wise (see below). I decided to draw Rock Hyraxes; as their name suggests, these small rodents live among craggy rocks. By including them in the picture I am parallelling the wisdom of the family building their house on a solid rock foundation. Notice there four Rock Hyrax (Mother, Father & two children), which is another parallel of the “wise” family.

As Jesus pointed out, the wise people are those that listen to his teaching, and then follow it. In other words, they hear Jesus’ words and put them into action in their own lives, rather than ignoring Jesus’ words and gaining no earthly or eternal benefits from them (as the fool or unwise person does).

Here is the scene without the figures in the foreground.

Proverbs 30:24-28 – New International Version

24 “Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise:
25 Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;
26 conies [1] are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags;
27 locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks;
28 a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces.”

[1]
That is, the hyrax or rock badger.

A note about the Conies (or rock Baders).
The latin name for the small furry mammal Rock Hyrax is Procavia capensis. Native to Africa and the Middle East, adult Rock Hyraxes weigh 8.8–11.0 lb (4–5 kg), they are found at elevations up to 13,800 ft (4,200 metres) above sea level in habitats with rock crevices, allowing them to escape from predators. They are most active in the morning and evening, although their activity pattern varies substantially with season and climate.

It is not entirely clear what the Hebrew writer of Proverbs had in mind regarding the identification of this animal. The Hebrew word “shaphan” used in verse 26 might be translated as Hyrax (Rock Badger), or as “cony” (rabbit). Some commentaries translate the word as “a hare, hedgehog, or rabbit,” while others refer to them as“Arabian mice”.

Regardless of their true identification, these animals make their homes in rocks. Though they are small and weak, nevertheless they have the wisdom to find security in the rocks, which is what the writer of Proverbs is referring to.

By comparison, we human beings (though we are also quite physically weak) can only find real security in the Rock, namely Jesus the Christ. This message of security afforded by the Lord is found everywhere throughout the Bible, some examples below:

Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my Rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust….”

Psalm 40:2 “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a Rock, and established my goings.”

Psalm 61:2 “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.”

Whilst in the New Testament, the apostle Paul remarks concerning the wandering children of Israel:

1 Corinthians 10:4 “…for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”

Bible Doctrine Notes
6:46 JESUS CHRIST, Lord (1.22I)

The word “Lord” is not just a title of respect when we discuss, or talk to, Jesus the Christ. To be truly Lord, Jesus is becomes our Master, which calls us to strict obedience to all He says. (See note on Luke 1:5-23).

6:46-49 ELECTION, Righteousness (4.15C)
Election involves God choosing a particular person or group of people to a particular task or relationship, especially eternal life. The elect (believers) have true wisdom if they hear God’s words and put them into practice in their lives; they are obedient followers of the teachings of Jesus the Christ. Thus their lives have solid, secure foundations. Election results in righteous, obedient lives in the believer.

6:46-49 DISCIPLESHIP, Lordship of Christ (4.33D)
A true disciple of Jesus is one who hears/reads the words he utters as authoritative teaching, but more than that, it is one who heeds them as authoritative commands. In this parable of the wise and foolish builders, Jesus showed the foolishness of merely claiming Him as Lord, but then not being obedient to His words. We fool ourselves if we claim Jesus as our Lord, but do not put His words into actions in our lives. When we make false claims about Christ’s Lordship in our lives, we are in for a shocking surprise. See note on Romans 6:5-18, which says: Who or what you obey is really your master. By human nature we obey sin; but the Christian is dead to sin and alive to God. Sin is no longer our master, for we under God’s grace. By becoming a Christian we forego our addiction to sin, because we have voluntarily become obedient, from our hearts, to a new Master: Jesus the Christ.

6:47 REVELATION, Faithfulness (3.23B)
True followers of Jesus (Christians) are those people who receive God’s revelation, but more importantly, they deliberately choose to follow those directives with obedient hearts and actions, putting those teachings into practice in their lives. See note on 6: 20, which says: For those who believe and for those who need to, Jesus revealed the character and nature of God the Father in 1) His own actions and 2) by interpreting God’s heart in statements collected later, to teach and direct His disciples. These sayings often known as The Sermon on the Plain (which parallels Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount (see Matthew 5-7)) and were organized, probably for teaching purposes, to instruct new converts in the early church. These sayings of Jesus call converts into deeper discipleship and to accept God’s revelation, and to live it out in their daily lives.
