Some people have said that if they could see a miracle (an “impossible”, supernatural event) then they would believe in God. Which sounds reasonable… until you read what a person’s actual reaction was to seeing Jesus perform MANY miracles!
In Mark’s gospel (chp 6) we read that Jesus fed 5,000 men (and all the women and children too!) with just 5 loaves of bread and two fish… you can’t get more miraculous than that!
Notice this: Jesus’ disciples were there and SAW that miracle.
Then Jesus sent his disciples in a boat back across the Sea of Galilee. At 3 o’clock in the morning, having seen them struggling against a fierce storm, Jesus WALKED OUT ON THE WATER and got into the boat… another astonishing miracle, right before the disciples eyes!
What was the disciples reaction? Mark 6:51-52 tells us, “They [Jesus’ disciples] were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.”
Notice that the disciples had seen the miracles Jesus performed, right before their very eyes, AND YET THEY DID NOT BELIEVE. Therefore, Seeing is NOT believing. To believe in God requires that God opens your heart and spiritual eyes, in order that you can believe. We can’t do that for ourselves. So if you want to believe in God, pray & ask Him to open your eyes so that you can believe in him. And guess what? When you do believe in God, you won’t need to see any miracles! You might see some, but your belief in God won’t depend on seeing any.
