Judges 6:6-10 (NLT)
6 So Israel was reduced to starvation by the Midianites. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help.
7 When they cried out to the Lord because of Midian, 8 the Lord sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of slavery in Egypt. 9 I rescued you from the Egyptians and from all who oppressed you. I drove out your enemies and gave you their land. 10 I told you, ‘I am the Lord your God. You must not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you now live.’ But you have not listened to me.”
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative. I have set this scene just before sunrise.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The glow on the horizon is the pre-dawn sun, which creates feint highlights on the landscape and figures.
A campo fire (unseen in the middle foreground) provides a slight warm yellow glow to the ground and figures.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
An un-named prophet, standing on a rock.
Four very thin Israelite men, huddled round a camp fire.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Judges 6 describes events occurring roughly two centuries after Joshua’s death, likely within the period of 1,200–1,000 B.C.
My picture shows miserable-looking, starving Israelite men camping outside on top of a hill. A prophet sent by the Lord is standing on a rock, addressing them.
Verse 6 informs us that the Israelites were reduced to starvation by the Midianite hordes who invaded Israel and stole all the crops and resources for seven years. Then the Lord sent an un-named prophet to tell the Israelites why they were suffering so much. He explained that, in spite of them knowing that the Lord had brought them out of slavery in Egypt, some 350 to 400 years previously, the Israelites must not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land they now lived. And Yahweh’s clearest conclusion? “You have not listened to me.” Hence Israel’s troubles.
Here’s the scene without the figures.
