Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

John 3:14-15 (ANIV)
14 [Jesus continued] “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” [1]

[1]
Or, believers may have eternal life in him.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Verse 2 informs us this scene takes place at night.

LIGHTING NOTES:
As in the previous picture, oil lamps hung from the ceiling and on the table and in a wall alcove provide the warm yellow light that illuminates this scene. In this picture we can only see the lamp on the table, but the others are still lighting the scene. Shadows are cast below the figures and objects by these light sources.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
On the left is Moses, in the centre is Jesus the Christ, on the right is the Pharisee Nicodemus.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene occurs immediately after the previous scene in time, however the viewers vantage point has shifted to the left, and moved closer to the figures. This picture shows Jesus standing up in a posture similar to being crucified, as an illustration of how he will die. Since Jesus mentioned Moses in his conversation with Nicodemus I thought it wise to include a representation of Moses in the scene: he is depicted in a “thought bubble”. I designed the bronze snake many years ago, and deliberately included a cross-shape that it is wrapped around, to illustrate the connection Jesus makes between his own death on the cross (and the salvation that this provides for us) and the lifting up (by Moses) of the bronze snake to provide healing for the snake-bitten Hebrews in the desert wilderness.

Notice the little mouse looking up at Jesus, which I drew in the previous scene!

Here’s the scene without the figures in the picture.

Bible Doctrine Notes
3:13-15 Jesus Christ, Preexistent (1.27A)

(See note of Mark 10:45). Jesus’s home is heaven, not earth. No other human being can claim that. Jesus chose to obey God the Father, come to earth, and be lifted up on the cross for our sins, and to give us eternal life.

3:15-16,36 SALVATION, Eternal Life (4.26B)
Another term referring to eternal life is the kingdom of God and the new birth. It is a present possession as well as a future hope for all people who believe in Jesus, the Son of God. God loves the world, and the people in it, so much that He sent his Son to die on the cross to grant eternal life to those who entrust their lives to Him. God does not want anyone’s sin to destroy them and consign them to Hell, however those people who reject the Son are already living under Father God’s wrath. While people are still physically alive they need to believe and know Jesus, who grants eternal life.
