John 2:15 (ANIV)
So he [Jesus] made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Not specified in the Bible narrative. I have set this scene in the mid morning, moments after the previous scene.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (in a cloudy sky) illuminates this scene, from the East (right), casting shadows to the left of figures & objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Lots of Jews & Gentiles in the Courtyard of the Gentiles, outside the temple in Jerusalem, Israel.
In the middle foreground of the scene (behind the two running cows), from left to right stands Judas Iscariot, James (son of Zebedee), Andrew, John (son of Zebedee), Matthew/Levi, Jesus (in blue outer robe & pale head scarf), Mary Magdelene, Simon/Peter.
There are also 2 cows, 2 sheep & various sellers/merchants.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
I enjoyed drawing this scene, with all the movement & action going on! I have slightly faded the smaller, background figures, so that the main characters in the foreground stand out a bit more.
I have used the same background that I drew for the previous scene, “John 02 – Jesus clears the temple – Scene 02 – Jesus observes the sellers”.
Notice the man & woman in the bottom left hand corner of the picture, by an upturned table. They are money changers, reaching out to pick up the money Jesus scattered. They are two (of the many!) people from the bottom left hand corner of the previous picture “John 02 – Jesus clears the temple – Scene 02 – Jesus observes the sellers”.
Apart from copper & silver coins scattered on the pavement of the courtyard, I have included some green/brown “deposits” from the frightened animals as well!
Here is the original pencil sketch I drew to design this scene.
