Genesis 2:8-9 (NLT)
8 Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. 9 The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground—trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene shows the garden in Eden that God created, in the middle of the garden stands the tree of life (on the left) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (on the right). In the foreground is the man, Adam. Beside him are fruit trees/bushes: red pears on the left, blackberries behind him and purple plums on the right.

There is a spring gushing water up from the ground, in the middle of the scene. From it a river is flowing between the two trees. This is drawn in reference to verses 5 and 6, “The Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land.”

Here is the scene without the figure in the foreground.

Bible Doctrine Notes
2:8-24 GOD, Grace (1.14C)

After creating the man Adam from the dust of the earth, God placed him in a garden, specifically and carefully designed as a comfortable home for him. Then God created woman as a companion for the man, to share life with him in a mutually fulfilling, complimentary relationship. The righteousness and grace of God were demonstrated in Genesis 2:16-17 where God instructed Adam and Eve concerning what was right and what was wrong. God desired for them to live a rich, full life, but that life was to be lived in the ways of righteousness that God had set forth. God’s requirements for us are more than arbitrary rules for us to live out; they are designed to bring the maximum good to us. Doing what God declares right is always in our own very best interests. That is God’s gracious intent.

2:9 LAST THINGS, Believer’s Resurrection (4.62D)
The tree of life apparently represents the availability of eternal life for Adam and Eve. From the very beginning, God’s purpose and intention for us was life, not death, however God created us with the freedom to chose death over life for ourselves.
