Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Mark 12:41 (NLT)
Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Not specified in Bible.

LIGHTING NOTES:
This scene is inside the court of the Temple, in Jerusalem. The light for this scene is diffused sunlight, coming from the left & right ends of the corridor-like space the figures are in.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Jesus (in blue outer robe & head scarf) & James (son of Zebedee and brother of John) one of his disciples, in the right foreground.
Various rich people.
Notice the young girl waving cheerfully to Jesus, who is waving back!

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Verse 41 states that Jesus sat down. This is why James (who is standing next to Jesus) appears to be so much taller.

I enjoyed drawing the rich clothing of the people on the left, although such attention to fabric detail always takes a long time to colour up! We can see various rich people coming into the area to donate their gifts to the Temple treasury. They are chatting amongst themselves. We can’t see the widow of this story yet; she comes in, in the next scene.

Apparently there were 13 trumpet-shaped collection boxes, used for receiving worshippers’ freewill offerings and contributions to the Temple. I have only drawn one such collection box.
