Luke 7:42-43 (ANIV)
42 [Jesus continued] “Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he cancelled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt cancelled.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative. Daytime.
LIGHTING NOTES:
This scene is fictional (a parable), set inside the money-lenders house. The main source of light is the fire brazier by the money-lender’s chair. There is also sunlight coming in from windows set high in the walls.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
The money-lender mentioned in Jesus’ parable is the man in golden robes, sitting on a throne-like chair, in the middle of the room. Behind him are two tough-looking guards holding spears. On the left is a scribe, holding a pair of weighing scales. A lady harpist is in the background. To the right are the two men who owe money: the man in green owes five hundred denarii, the one in purple owes fifty denarii.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This fictional scene (the conclusion to Jesus’ short parable about two people who owe a lot of money to a money-lender) shows the two men who owe the money-lender the debt of fifty denarii (the equivalent of 50 day’s pay) and the much larger debt of five hundred denarii (1.3 years pay). Both men are on the right of the scene. The man who owed much more is kneeling down and clasping his hands in a gesture of thankfulness, whilst the 2nd man is standing, with a much more matter-of-fact expression! These two contrasting reactions are in reference to what Jesus says about people who have been forgiven little & forgiven much sin. The former love little, whilst the later love much. The man in the green outer robe loves much, because his much larger debt has been cancelled.
I gave the money-lender rich looking clothing, a throne-like chair, and guards/servants, to show that he is wealthy.
Notice that we are viewing the same room I illustrated in the previous scene, but with the corridor behind the viewer.
Here is the scene without the figures.
