Judges 6:28-32 (NLT)
28 Early the next morning, as the people of the town began to stir, someone discovered that the altar of Baal had been broken down and that the Asherah pole beside it had been cut down. In their place a new altar had been built, and on it were the remains of the bull that had been sacrificed. 29 The people said to each other, “Who did this?” And after asking around and making a careful search, they learned that it was Gideon, the son of Joash.
30 “Bring out your son,” the men of the town demanded of Joash. “He must die for destroying the altar of Baal and for cutting down the Asherah pole.”
31 But Joash shouted to the mob that confronted him, “Why are you defending Baal? Will you argue his case? Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If Baal truly is a god, let him defend himself and destroy the one who broke down his altar!” 32 From then on Gideon was called Jerub-baal, which means “Let Baal defend himself,” because he broke down Baal’s altar.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Verse 28 informs us this picture takes place in the early morning.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen in the East (left)) illuminates this scene, casting shadows below & to the right of figures and objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
There are two groups of people in this scene. The tightly bunched group in the top right hand side are the crowd of towns people, led by a man in a pinkish outer robe.
The other group of people are Joash, his various servants and Joash’s son Gideon.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene shows the confrontation between Joash and the crowd of people from the town of Ophrah. Joash has come out of his front door, and is pointing his finger at the mob, as he shouts angrily at them! Joash’s servants have rapidly gathered to defend their master, carrying agricultural implements and massing near Joash to defend him if necessary. The servants of Joash include an archer, sitting on Joash’s house wall!
Notice that Gideon is peering round the door frame at the angry crowd!
We can just see the very top of the first stone altar Gideon made to the Lord God, in the middle bottom of the picture. In the bottom right corner is the rough grey bark of the great tree of Ophrah.
Notice the weather is changing… there is a thunderstorm approaching from the right hand side (West), which is my visual representation of the human argument occurring beneath the storm front!
Here’s the scene without the figures.
