Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Genesis 37:29-31 (NLT)
29 Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief. 30 Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, “The boy is gone! What will I do now?”
31 Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph’s robe in its blood.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Indeterminate from scripture, verse 29 tells us it was “some time later”, which could be on the same day Joseph’s brothers sold him to the Ishmaelites, or it could be a day or two later.
In any case, I have set the scene at late morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen, high above & left) illuminates this scene, casting shadows to the right & below figures & objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: Reuben (tearing his clothes in grief), Naphtali, Zebulun (holding the goat’s hind legs), Judah (dipping Joseph’s coat in blood), Asher (holding the goat’s forelegs), Gad (peeking over his brother’s shoulders at the back) & Levi (holding the knife).

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This picture shows some of Joseph’s eleven brothers holding a goat they have killed, and dipping his coat into the blood.

Reuben is the man in the left foreground who is tearing his clothes & crying out in grief (see verse 29).

I have used the background from Scene 04 – Joseph sold to Ishmaelites, for this picture as well.
