Acts 27:9-10 (ANIV)
9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Fast. [1] So Paul warned them, 10 “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.”

That is, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative. I have set this scene in the mid afternoon
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen in the west (left)) illuminates this scene, casting long shadows to the right of figures and objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: on the left of the angled bowsprit mast is Dr. Luke (in green outer robe), on the right hand side of the mast is apostle Paul, with an un-named woman behind him, Centurion Julias and the un-named owner of the ship.
Various sailors on deck.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
I decided to draw two versions of this scene:
01) (This page) Acts 27 – Paul sails for Rome – Scene 07 – Paul’s warning (Version 01).
02) (Next page) Acts 27 – Paul sails for Rome – Scene 07 – Paul’s warning (Version 02). In this version I have added a close-up of Paul, so you can see him warning the centurion Julius and the ship owner that there is trouble ahead.
This was an exciting illustration to draw, as the ship is leaning over into the sea, and there was lots of waves and spray to draw! Notice the dolphins riding the bow wake of the ship… they look as if they are having fun too!
The main mast and mailsail is not visible in this picture, as it is behind the viewer, but the Spritsail is visible; that’s the small, square-rigged canvas sail, hung on a yard, below the bowsprit, the wooden pole angled out over the bow of the ship.
On the right horizon is the island of Crete and behind that are large clouds… the front of the hurricane storm that is about the engulf the ship.
