Acts 27:7b-8 (ANIV)
7b …When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone. 8 We moved along the coast with difficulty and came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in Bible narrative. I’ve set this scene in the afternoon.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen, high in the sky on the left (West)) illuminates the scene, casting vague shadows below and to the right of objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
None, except Lacerta trilineata (Balkan green lizard) in the left foreground.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
The Alexandrian ship carrying the apostle Paul to Rome is here anchored in the bay at Fair Havens on the island of Crete, with the lifeboat secured behind it.
Notice the grey clouds are drifting away, leaving clearer skies over the ship & island, this weather is in anticipation of verse 13, the reference to more favourable weather for the ship’s further voyage towards Rome.
Crete is home to several lizard species, including the endemic Cretan wall lizard (Podarcis cretensis) and the larger Balkan green lizard (Lacerta trilineata). The Cretan wall lizard is found in the western half of the island and on surrounding islets. The Balkan green lizard is the largest lizard on Crete and can be found in various habitats. Additionally, geckos, like the Turkish gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus), are also common. I have chosen to draw the Balkan green lizard (Lacerta trilineata) in the left foreground.
Here is the scene without the ship in the foreground.
