Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Acts 1:4-8 (ANIV)
4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, [1] but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
6 So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in Bible narrative. I have set this scene in the early morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen on the left, low in the sky) illuminates this scene, casting strong shadows to the right of figures, buildings and objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right (figures facing viewer): Jesus (in blue outer robe, sitting on parapet [1]). John (son of Zebedee).
From left to right (figures in foreground, facing away from viewer): Thaddeus/Judas (son of James) (in striped out robe), Thomas/Didymus, Andrew (in blue outer robe), Simon/Peter.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
There are two versions of this scene:
01) (Previous page) Acts 01 – Holy Spirit promised – Scene 02 – Wait for the gift (Version 01). In this version strong yellow sunlight illuminates some of the buildings & walls in streaks across the city. Strong shadows also occur in streaks across the city, from left to right.

02) (This page) Acts 01 – Holy Spirit promised – Scene 02 – Wait for the gift (Version 02). In this version I have omitted the strong sunlight & shadows streaks.

This scene shows Jesus sitting on the parapet [1] of a nearby house, surrounded by his disciples. Jesus is gesturing towards the city of Jerusalem, in connection to his statement, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised (the Holy Spirit).”

Here is the scene without the figures in the foreground.

[2]
A parapet is a low protective wall along the edge of a roof, bridge, or balcony, designed to prevent someone from falling off the roof. The provision of a parapet was a direct instruction from the Lord God in Deuteronomy 22:8 (see below).

Deuteronomy 22:8 New International Version (NIV)
When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof.
