John 3:19-21 (ANIV)
19 [Jesus continued] “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” [1]

Some interpreters end the quotation after John 3:15.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene uses a similar background to “John 03 – Jesus and Nicodemus – Scene 04 – For God so loved…”. The same map, wooden door and wall plaster can be seen, although this scene looks up towards the flat, reed and wooden supported ceiling.
Jesus is holding up a 4 wick oil lamp as an illustration of his point regarding the light and darkness found in the world.
Here’s the scene without the figures in the picture.

Background of John 03 – Jesus and Nicodemus – Scene 05 – Light versus darkness
Observant viewers will notice that I used the previous Bible Cartoon “John 03 – Light v’s darkness” in the thought bubble above Jesus’s head. That picture was draw many years ago in 2009! Jesus is referring to Himself as being “the Light that has come into the world” (verse 19).
3:19 Jesus Christ, Light (1.24F)
See note on John 1:4-5, which says:
Life involves conflict between God, who is entirely good, and evil powers. Evil is darkness, which shuts out opportunity to see or know good. God id the source of light which exposes evil for what it is. Jesus is that light in person, exposing the evil of the world and pointing the way to God. Compare John 8:12; 12:46; 1 John 2:8.
3:19-21 CHRISTIAN ETHICS, Character (4.41A)
Evil character causes people to reject Jesus. Either people are totally devoted in love to the darkness of the world’s way, or they are ready to have their lives examined and changed by Jesus, the Light of the world. People who are devoted to the ways of darkness are fearful of what the Light would reveal in their lives. People dedicated to truth in knowledge and action come to Christ and give evidence that God is at work in Christ’s coming.
