Bible Doctrine Notes
40:11 GOD, Love (1.14A)

Like a shepherd gently tending his lambs, so is the powerful Father God, who reaches down from Heaven in love to care for us tenderly. See notes on John 3:16; 1 John 4:7-16.

John 3:16 reads: The most profound expression of Father God’s love for us is the gift of sending his son Jesus to be our Saviour. The Greek word for love used in this passage has special significance, since it expresses a sacrificial, giving itself away on behalf of its object. This kind of love seeks nothing in return, but seeks the very best interests/outcomes for the object of that love. Verse 17 clarifies and states God’s intent and priority to save us over and above judging and condemning us. For this reason God is declared as love.

1 John 4:7-21 reads: This passage may be the strongest indication from the entire Bible of the love of God for us. The message is simple: God is love. The Greek word for love used here is agape which translates as a self-giving love that seeks the best interests/outcomes for the object of that love; not selfish or self-seeking in any way. Verse 19 reminds us that God’s amazing love us creates a love response in us. We can know if we truly belong to God by checking to see if love truly controls our lives. Love drives out any fear we might have of God’s judgement.
