Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

2 Kings 20:1 (ANIV)
In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Not specified in the Bible narrative.

LIGHTING NOTES:
We don’t know the time of day, and this is an interior scene, so there is no strong light source. There is simple lighting coming from above to illuminate this scene.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
King Hezekiah (looking ill in bed), the prophet Isaiah standing talking to him.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This is a fairly simple scene. I wanted to make the bed look large and ornate, as perhaps fits a king. I paid particular attention to the carved wood of the head and foot boards, making them look rich in ornamentation.

This is the first time I have drawn king Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah.

Bible Doctrine Notes
20:1-11 MIRACLE, Nature (2.23A)

Miracles can reverse a prophet’s pronouncement. Miracle’s can come about as a response to the prayers of God’s faithful people, in that they represent God’s own free, personal response to the needs and faith of his people. Although Isaiah the prophet declared that the king’s illness would kill him, the passionate prayer plea of the king changed that result. The poultice of figs, called for by the prophet Isaiah healed the king’s festering sore, such that nature assisted in this healing miracle.

20:1-11 EVIL AND SUFFERING, God’s Present Help (2.33D)
God can help overcome suffering, even when it means replacing one prophetic word with another. The king’s fervent prayer helps us to understand that God takes very seriously our repentance and faithfulness. God responded to Hezekiah’s prayer by adding fifteen years to his life.

20:1-11 HUMANITY, Death (2.44A)
Illness is sometimes the precursor to death. God is the author of life, and can bring healing from illness, such that life is prolonged. Physical death, however, can not be avoided.
